I'm a new LJ user, so I don't know if this okay or not just to post a question, but I'm dying to talk to other people about something that happened in the newest episode that aired earlier today. If I HAVE made a mistake, please let me know, and I'll remove the comment, okay?

Anyway! Hello peoples! In the episode of The Good Wife that aired today, did anyone else notice the MOMENT that happened between Kalinda and Alicia's new assistant? It was subtle, and over in a flash, but I saw something! I know that Kalinda's supposed to get a boyfriend (ick), but my mind went wild with the possibility of inter-office drama between Kalinda, the assistant, and the police guy.

So, did anyone else see this? Or am I just jumping at straws to keep Kalinda gay? XD And I know that a Donna was introduced by name in one of the episodes, so when are we going to see her?

Thanks everyone!

Howdy. I've been practicing for about 8 years on my own. Thing is I'm pretty unconventional as far as us Wiccans go (or at least this is what interactions have led me to believe) in the sense that I take "eclectic" to a ridiculous degree. There's not one form of Wicca I think would be perfect for me because I tend to improvise a lot of spells and rituals. I never really do the same thing twice except for banishings, summonings, and certain spells I do all the time (color magick, meditation rites, invisibility spells, etc). I believe in a Lord and Lady (though I admit to lean more towards Dianic Wicca in the sense that unconsciously I tend to focus more on the goddess), karma, spirit animals, divination, ghosts, and energy spells. Thing is, the afterlife.

I used to have my own vision of what the afterlife was. I still do think you sort of have a choice if you've lived a good life. You could be reincarnated, be a guardian for a loved one, explore nebulas in space, or move on to whatever plane awaits you after death. Or.

There is the issue of Summerland. What I've heard it described as is The Aisle of Apples. A sort of Eden-like place where it's plush and warm where you can speak with loved ones who have also deceased.

I definitely think is a possibility. In fact I believe most people when they pass need this sort of sanctuary to cope with being deceased in the beginning and maybe they choose to stay there.

I suppose I'm asking:

What is Summerland to you? Do you believe in it? Is there an alternative for "Hell?"

Okay, I'm reading about the dust-up about Harlequin (the romance writers, y'know) starting their own vanity publishing arm*, and as I go through the comments, every now and then one jumps out at me and breaks my heart into tiny little pieces.

These comments say things like "I know you have to pay to get published..." or "Up until I read this thread, I didn't realize you didn't pay to get published."

Oh sweet god.

You are all very smart people of impeccable taste--or at least, you're reading the blog, so I like to pretend--but just on the slim chance that any of you are not quite as informed on this topic as you could be--NO NO NO NO NO A THOUSAND TIMES NO.

The publisher pays you. ALWAYS. You do not pay the publisher. EVER. It does not cost the author to publish the book. The publisher does all that. They take the book and give you money. The only place you sign the check, to paraphrase, is on the back, is over the little line that says "Endorse here."

You don't pay to get published. The publisher pays you for the privilege of taking your book. You invest time and energy and printer cartridges. The publisher always pays you.

(This is also why you don't hire an illustrator--because the publisher hires them. And pays them. That is how it works.)

It's okay if you don't know this stuff. Don't feel dumb. Publishing is weird and arcane and I still take royalty statements to my buddy Deb and go "What does this mean?" and I still don't understand half of it. You're not dumb. Much of this isn't intuitive. You don't have to take my word for it--find the author resource online of your choice. and ask questions. There is no need to be embarassed.

I have produced...uh...if we count Digger volumes...nine books through four publishers. One of the publishers is a very respectable small press, one is a starting-out-but-getting-there small press, and two are big giant scary publishers with New York offices and budgets bigger than a third world country.

All four of them pay me money. Sometimes they pay me lots of money (at least by my standards, which are quite modest) and sometimes they pay me a couple hundred bucks. The big houses can afford to pay me mondo advances, the small presses can afford to take me to dinner.** This is fine.

The point is, they all pay me. I don't pay them. Ever.

The sum total I have spent on any book I have ever written was about two bucks worth of postage to send out the initial draft of Black Dogs, over a decade ago, and I did buy a decent pen in order to sign copies of Dragonbreath. (And by "decent" I mean like 2.99 for a pair. I am not a pen snob.) Then I lost the pen.

The only times money goes the other way is if I'm buying a couple of copies of Digger--I get free copies of each, of course, but sometimes I want to sell them at cons where Sofawolf's not attending--and in this case, they just slap the wholesale price against my royalties. This is pretty normal, and the only example I can come up with off the top of my head. (Okay, no, wait, I sent a print to my editor once because she wanted a signed art print of the Nurk cover for her office. Technically I paid for that, but I didn't stuff twenties in there or anything.)

I do not pay for those big publishing runs. Authors don't. There's a little under thirty thousand copies of Dragonbreath floating around out there. Total cost to me = $0.

If somebody is telling you that the authors do pay for these, they are either misinformed or...well...you're smart wombats, you can figure out yourself why somebody might have a vested interest in believing that you give people money for this sort of thing and who might not have your best interests at heart.

Now. Self-publishing. This is something else. If you are self-publishing, then you know it up front. (If you have to ask if you're self-publishing, there are problems already.) We can talk about this later and in lots of detail if anybody wants. Self-publishing is great for what it does well. I am a big fan of self-publishing. ( I myself have work in a self-published little anthology that our local comics group puts out every year, as a print-on-demand thing. You can buy it on Lulu, it's got some nice stuff in it, a couple of the members sell the occasional copy at conventions. I didn't buy any of the wholesale copies because I don't have table space in my usual con kit. Cost to me = $0. Profit if I HAD sold them at the table = maybe a buck or two. It's a neat little thing to have, but none of us are making money on it, and it's not a publishing credit I'd take seriously. I could talk about this longer, but we're already running long.) Self-publishing is kinda like merchandising. I would self-publish a webcomic the same way that I would get a run of T-shirts printed, I'd sell them at cons or over the internet, like T-shirts, and I would expect to make approximately the same amount of money.

So. To recap. They pay us. That's how it works. If you are paying them, then something is very very wrong.

If you're self-publishing, things are a little more complicated, but you should really only be self-publishing for stuff that self-publishing is good at. If you want to be a bestselling fiction author, that's not something self-publishing is particularly good at. If somebody tells you that self-publishing is good for that and you can make zillions if you give them your manuscript and a lot of money, they are predators and need to be ridden out of town on a rail.

Vanity publishing, which is what Harlequin Horizons is offering, is a scam. They take your money by the fistful and dangle this promise that if you pay enough, you can be a Real Writer. Well, Real Writers get paid, they don't pay. Nobody is so bad a writer that they deserve to lose money for it. If you just want readers, put it on the internet, if you just want a physical copy, go to Lulu, but please, PLEASE don't believe that writers have to pay to be successful. Please.

*There are lots of posts and comment wars. The fast and amusing one is here. The gist is that they're implying heavily to the marks that this is a Real Book with Harlequin and then turning around and telling their real authors, who are Not Amused, that no, no, it's not, nobody should think that, and the books won't actually be on shelves or anything, we just kinda found a way to make money off the slush pile. It is very sad and makes me very angry.

**And in no way shape or form should you think I'm raggin' on the small presses--I am deleriously glad they exist because a big New York house wouldn't ever publish Digger, there's just not the demand. Small presses aren't small because they can't be big, it's because they publish things where demand is small, but often very passionate. I do not know how many copies of Digger have sold, but I'm sure all for volumes are less than the initial, not-very-large-by-industry-standards print-run of Nurk. That doesn't mean Digger's bad, it's just specialized.

For reasons not unconnected to [info]molly_brown's recent infection of my brain with a particular tune, I seem to be using a picture of Lady Gaga for one of the player characters in Earth Girls Aren't Easy. Another will probably be Kristen Bell (Veronica Mars). Not sure about the male characters yet, but I think they will be equally famous faces.

Paradox is a new five part SF series on BBC1. I just watched the first episode. I think it's likely to be fairly good: perhaps a bit middle of the road.

The premise is that a scientist monitoring solar flares picks up some pictures from the future, which seem to show a bombing at 8.30 the next evening. He reports it to the police, and a three-person squad lead by Tamsin Outhwaite is set to investigate, and perhaps change the future.

The space scientist is played as a sort of male vamp, all brooding and trying to sex up Tamsin. UST is all very well but this was too much, and from nowhere. Incidentally he is an atheist called Christian King, which - come on - that's a bit heavy-handed.

I much preferred Tamsin's ex-boyfriend and sidekick, Ben, who is older and more prettier I thought.

My guess is this will be one of those things that comes and goes. But I like British short drama series.

(Anyone else watch it?)

Good morning all,
I am so excited that there will more NCIS fiction coming soon! I saw Jaina's earlier post and I feel like it's the day before xmas and I'm expecting to find a pony under the tree.

I will be posting a Ziva/Abby for the December event, and I am having trouble finding a Beta. This a a new fandom for me, and sadly, my past betas don't watch NCIS.

I could really use a beta who knows the characters well and is willing to beta a long fic.
Thanks,
Lisa

Oh, and thanks to Ralst for providing this space!

1. What's the canonical status of "Effeston" as her House? I know BF has Heartshaven and there's the heavily-hinted-at Dvora in the Book of the War (does that one come in anywhere else?), but I found this floating around a couple of sources, but none that I trust wholeheartedly (specifically, Will B. Swift's awesome-but-sometimes-over-reaching-the-evidence-by-some-way site, and a comment thread on some forum somewhere by ... er, whovortex3000).

2. She has a triple first, but do we know what specific field her qualifications are in? (I have a feeling Ribos would tell me, but I sold off my Key to Time VHS and haven't got the DVDs yet.)

I've considered telling my mom (whom I live with) for some time now about my being Pagan. I tried doing this before it just got my BOS thrown in the trash and my pentacle thrown in the lake behind our old apartment. However now, I'm much older and she should be able to see that it's not just a phase like she claimed before. But something always stops me, I think it's just because I know she's not going to accept it and I don't want to make our living situation uncomfortable. But, sometimes it's hard being closeted and still live out my life the way I want to ya know? Heh I guess that should read: I don't want to make our living situation any MORE uncomfortable.

But I think I've found something that's going to eventually make me come out to her: gay rights. It's no secret to anyone I know that I support gay rights. To me love is love is love. Period. Two women wanna get married? Go right ahead! Two men want to adopt a child? Alright, no problem with that here. However she, is totally against gay rights and homosexuals in general.

Every time the subject comes up (and lately it's been coming up frequently because of the Miss CA scandal--PreJean was against gay rights, the new Miss CA is for them) and since it's been on the news, she'll make remarks like "that's terrible" when someone mentions supporting gay rights or when Ellen and Portia's wedding photos are shown.

She always throws the bible argument at me. "that's an unpardonable sin" or "those people are going to hell" etc. And every time she says something like that I have to bite my tongue in order not to say back "I don't care what that book says" which of course would just lead right into the fact that I'm not Christian and haven't been for 10 years. *sigh*

And no, she doesn't know that I myself am part of the LGBT community.

it's commonly said that everyone has a sixth sense to some degree or another and with enough attention and practice, these powers can be honed.
I was wondering if anyone knows of any books that are useful for doing this, I want to focus mainly on scrying, but I'd love to be able to physically sense energy better that I already can (which is a little, but not much).
Any suggestions welcome
Blessings,
Fae

Things must be getting bad in the valleys economics wise. I was fed up with being kept in doors for nearly 3 days by the horrible weather and decided to go for a wander round Blackwood as the shopping area there is usually sheltered from the worst of the the wind though there is not much help with the rain. I found to my surprise that a new shop had opened and from the queue inside was doing a roaring trade selling all kinds of electronics from cameras to desk top computers. Then I looked at the name, The Cash Machine, with a small but very visible three balls after it.
For the first time in my lifetime a Pawn Brokers has opened in Blackwood and slap bang on the main street not tucked away on a side street like the ones in Newport
I've never been in a pawn brokers so I went in for a nose around. It Turned out the queue fo people were selling, all of the were selling video games. There was a nice little collection of now out of date digital cameras, the best 'only' having 8 megapixels. But they were very cheap, ranging from £19:99 up to £47;99 and small enough to fit in my hand bag or pocket so I went for a mid range one at £29;99. It came with it's box and all the paraphernalia it needs for charging and downloading and with a little case. I've been having a go with it this morning but I'm having difficulty with the focus at the moment as the pictures below will show. The first one is supposed to be out of focus in the fore ground but in focus in the background. The second one seems to have come out fine but every thing else I snapped was way off. I have a lot to learn.

page hit counter

As mentioned previously, I’ll be doing the guest thing at Dragonmeet, in London, this coming Saturday. I’ll be taking part in the following panels:

11.00-12.00: HeroQuest, with Jeff Richards

2.30-3.30: State of Gaming, with Erik Mona, Brennan Taylor, and Angus Abranson

4:30-5:30: Q&A Free-For-All, fellow participants TBA

When not paneling I’ll be weaseling at the Pelgrane Press stand. Don’t be shy; pop by to chat, get books signed, or share particularly piquant mild disappointments. (This last requirement waived for visiting Americans.)

And don’t forget, [info]spencerpine is offering a convention special on his book Play Unsafe: £1 off if you get me to sign it. £2 off if you successfully elicit a detail-oriented response from me explaining why I wrote it. Even if you already have one, that’s surely enough reason to purchase another.

Title: Second Thoughts
Fandom: L&O: SVU
Pairing: Liz/Casey
Rating: G
Spoilers: None
Authors note: There is some meta going around about BDSM in fic at the moment, and this poured forth from it. There is no kink in this fic (or sex. Hello, G rating!)

The paper was heavier, the ink seemed darker somehow, and even the simplest of words looked foreign to her. )
